About the work
The act of frottage – taking rubbings, has been central to much of my work since 2006. Broken Ground, 2020, is from a small series of drawings collectively titled Surface Fill, made between 2018 and 2020. The drawings utilize frottage to transfer the natural physical surface of stone, slate, earth etc., onto paper, to make traces of reality. Some of the resulting embedded graphite images are left as purely direct representations of the original, others, such as Broken Ground, include drawn interventions which transform and interrupt the natural surface, introducing an element of artificiality and ambiguity of scale.
