About the work
Fixture brings together different strands of drawing traditions, styles and approaches. Indian lotus leaves, Japanese wave patterns, Islamic geometric patterns, Tantric symbolism and Western Minimalism are combined and applied on antique paper. I've been working for the past 25 years with master miniature painter Riyaz Uddin in a studio we established in Jaipur's Old City. Once I've designed and laid out the formal aspects of the image, Riyaz and his assistants render it with infinitesimal detail using single-hair-tipped brushes and the works get passed back and forth between Brooklyn and Jaipur, often over a period of 2 to 3 years, with new layers and details being added on.
