About the work
The Monachopsis Drawings are a series of drawings I have been creating during a number of lockdowns in Ireland. I set myself the task of creating a drawing or two every-single day, partly as a distraction and partly as a metaphysical antidepressant. The drawings were also informed by my research into artists who lived through or were affected by previous “plagues”, such as Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch and the black humour of Breughel the Elder. It was the Dutch artist’s works that really left the greatest impression on me, and the series skirts the line between humour and horror, sometimes feeling claustrophobic and paralyzing and at other times unnervingly funny. I quite like creating tension on the page and seeing what happens when the work is put out to the public. The word ‘Monachopsis’ means to feel maladapted or out of place in the world. I think right now we all can relate to this emotional status.
