About the work
I left the cake out in the rain…
Well, yes, I did leave it out in the rain. I’d been drawing on stained and distressed paper, so I thought I’d maltreat the sheet, leaving it out overnight in the garden weighed down with coffee grounds and ash, splashed with red wine. It rained and, after I’d washed it, the result was promising though the paper was fragile. The rest involved making moves to flatten it, damaging the surface, correcting the damage and staining it some more. The curl was persistent, and I backed it with three layers before I eventually had a flat sheet, somewhat thicker! I like the way the thickness becomes a part of the drawing. All a bit like putting a cake together really.
